Step One: Discovering What's Possible?
Great coaches, like great leaders, are never satisfied with the status quo. As a hockey coach, I was eternally optimistic and continuously looked for opportunities to improve my coaching strategies and build a better team.
Management guru Tom Peters says there is no "final word." There is always a better way to do just about everything. Whatever your role coach, manager, supervisorthat's a powerful starting point.
Over the summer, as I began envisioning how the team was going to look with the changes I had in mind, I thought about the possibilities. "There's always a better way," I reminded myself as I jotted some questions and ideas, including the following:
- Is it possible to play a perfect hockey gameno mistakes, no penalties and every play is executed perfectly?
- How could I better position the team captain? In what ways could I expand his role and responsibilities?
- What could I do to get more fans to come out for our games?
- What possibilities were there to recruit players from the European leagues?
- In what ways could the role of assistant coach be redesigned?

From A Review
Paul Thornton has done it again! He has followed his extremely practical Best Leadership Advice I Ever Got with this insightful little gem of a leadership manual, a text that is, indeed, chock full of big ideas. His books more than deliver on the promise of their intriguing titles. I recommend Big Ideas to all leaders, no matter how many (or few) their followers.

I studied and observed what the top coaches did that made them successful. Big Leadership Ideas describes my journey from player to coach to leader.
