Griffon drew a deep breath. Using tactical hand signals, he gestured for Fineous to move through the gap first.
The stairway they descended ended in another security door. This appeared to have been rent asunder and smashed in the old battle.
This in turn opened onto another of the vast spaces, reminiscent of the garages they’d found far above.
But this one held...horror.
Cages were stacked four high, in serried ranks that stretched into the distance. Thick dust settled on the bars, the walkways that gave access, the rudimentary food, water, and waste disposal systems and the human bodies.
Desiccation by the dry air had mummified the thousands of men, women, and children.
Stunned, Griffon walked over to the nearest cage. The remnants of long blonde hair marked what had probably been a pretty little girl. It might have just been his imagination, or the effects of mummification, but the frozen expression seemed to be screaming in sheer unadulterated horror.
He glanced up and about. All the cages held bodies with identical expressions.

Two powerful alien forces, the sadistic half-human Brotherhood and the savage Hivers, are determined to destroy all human life on Earth. All that stands between them and the achievement of their goal are the old Earth team and their Raider allies.
Enemy actions force the Earth team to deploy on an emergency reconnaissance mission. The search for information quickly expands into a desperate battle against growing horror, terror, and despair. They discover far more than anyone could imagine, including clues as to the true nature of their enemies and the darkest secrets of their homeland.
While their skills and determination sustain them through the dangers springing up on all sides, their resources and their strength, individually as well as those of the team and their allies as a whole, are swiftly draining away.
When all is lost, and only one option remains, they seize it. They launch a desperate near-suicidal assault at the very heart of their vastly superior enemy.
The eagerly awaited sequel to Vector delivers with a vengeance.

From A Review
Virus is a well developed, smart sci fi with lots of action, intrigue, and some unique alien species based upon the premise what if the dinosaurs had continued to evolve. Revenge of the reptiles. The detail was amazing . . .

Writing this sequel to Vector, and returning to the adventures of Griffon and company, is like visiting an old friend.
It's reached the point where I don't feel that I wrote the story so much as recorded the reminiscence of an old war buddy.
