3-D Cover for Paradigm Lost

"All you hard-core science fiction fans, don't miss this first book in the Argosy Trilogy." ForemostPress.com

PARADIGM LOST by Stephen J. Schrader (2008, 221 pp., pb.; publ. Foremost Press, Cedarburg WI, www.foremostpress.com, ISBN 978-0-9789704-9-9).

Haven’t had a sci-fi book to review in a while, so pay attention. The first book in the Argosy Trilogy, its premise is enough to give one a migraine. What if the next technological revolution is so far out, so beyond our current limits of human comprehension, that it will totally remake our world as we know it? But there’s one catch: the present world will have to be unmade first. One of America’s shuttlecraft is unavoidably destined to crash into an obsolete weather satellite, yet the crew is miraculously rescued by a mysterious Captain Jacob Brinn and his even more mysterious research submarine, the Argo. As it turns out, the good Captain possesses the secrets of all things wonderful: anti-gravity, artificial gravity, plasma weapons, and perpetual motion. Secrets that, if released, will cause an apocalyptic revolution across the planet, possibly killing billions of people. Once advised of this, the nations of the world unite against his scheme, but he’s determined to unleash his new world on Earth’s inhabitants, whether they want it or not.

Just a note to say that I have finished all five of Stephen Schrader's books and how much I enjoyed each one. While I'm not a SciFi fan, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed each book. The characters just seemed to jump off the page and each scene was extremely visual. From Vector to Tartarus each book is well worth the read. Keep up the good work, Stephen.

Paradigm Lost is about two reporters who are brought aboard a submarine, which is captained by a mysterious man named Brinn. Captain Brinn has learned of and frontiered amazing technologies, such as clean, abundant, nearly endless energy sources, and anti-gravity. Using these technologies, he has invented several devices, vehicles, and weapons.

When he first attempted to share these technologies with the world, various governments tried to quiet him. In an attempt to cover up his discoveries, a terrorist cell from a middle eastern government murdered his parents. Now he and his crew are determined to force the governments of the world to release information about these new technologies, pushing humanity into a new era and effectively shifting the paradigm of who has the power and control.

This book would have made a great graphic novel. Its characters and their reactions are usually over the top and melodramatic. However the concept behind the book is interesting and the story is well paced. I wasn't ever bored when reading it and in fact there were a few times that I had a hard time putting it down.

I feel that I should give the author props for the name of the book which, refers to Milton's Paradise Lost in which Satan is viewed to be the protagonist. After waging war in heaven, Satan is cast down to hell where he crosses the Abyss in order to reach the Earth so that he can tempt Adam and Eve, and bring about the world's first paradigm shift. In a way, Satan is similar to Captain Brinn, who also goes to extreme measures to bring about a change.

In Stephen J. Schrader's third published sci-fi novel, Paradigm Lost, and the first of the Argosy Trilogy, he has produced a mind-numbing tour de force. Not since the grandfather of science fiction, Jules Verne, unleashed his immortal Captain Nemo has there been such an incredible combination of real science and high adventure.

Captain Jacob Brinn, a "theoretical engineer" of preternatural skill, offered the world the wonders of tomorrow, today. For that, he got to watch his parents die, mistakenly killed by the terrorists sent to assassinate him. Unfortunately for the ones who sent the assassins, they made the mistake of assuming that their operatives had been successful. That gave the Captain the breathing space to alter the purpose and the mission of his fabulous Argo from one of expanding the limits of human understanding, to a mission of war.

Now, Captain Brinn is activating his well-laid trap. He will force the governments of the world to accept the new paradigm by challenging, and defeating the military might of the entire world. For this he will use nothing but his own genius and his hand-picked crew of Argonauts.

Stephen J. Schrader, a disabled combat vet and former career US Army Counterintelligence agent, uses his skills and experience, and ten years of research to craft such a novel as is only seen once a century; if that. He is currently working on the two sequels to the Argosy Trilogy. Stay tuned!
