Snippet from Book

Berlin, Germany, Present Day
Richard Rune stood facing a wall of his private office observing several rows of flat high-definition computer screens. The computers informed him not only about the status of his great financial empire, but every major political event around the globe. He owned companies and industries using other aliases he had learned to assume over many centuries before the industrial revolution. Money offered him a very comfortable living, but money, according to his philosophy, was only a means to an end. Money was a tool he used trying to make the human world better. Unfortunately, it was a task that went far beyond even the legendary Twelve Labors of Hercules.

Today, he wore a different face, not the face of the Richard Rune mortals and immortals knew him as. A long time ago, thanks to the mysterious, magical gift that had come from outer space, he had learned to manipulate his body chemistry and every cell and organ in his body. He was the only immortal capable of such a feat. He was the father of all the immortals who ever lived. Over countless centuries, his "children" managed to stay hidden from public awareness.

Occasionally, they made their presence known through legends and folk tales. There were human trustees who were aware of their existence. They kept quiet about it out of fear of being ridiculed or labeled insane. And if an immortal got involved with a human, he or she did their best to keep them loyal. Of course, certain things, sometimes tragic things, were inevitable. He himself had to end a few love affairs when his mortal lovers betrayed him. Thankfully, mankind had enough on their plate than to worry about people who never died and could kill by mere touch. One question always kept coming back to him: why did humanity never learn from its own mistakes?

From A Review

PRICE OF LIFE - by David Crane

David Crane never disappoints! Only a skilled author has the ability to set a stage for terror, the kind that grips you in its maws and keeps you turning pages. Crane adeptly introduces numerous characters who give the reader insights into the subterfuge that exists among a group of people who call themselves the Immortals. These rich and powerful men and women have two distinctly different agendas. One group is responsible for keeping mankind's history while the other group plots to annihilate mankind so that they can rule the world. And in between these two powerful forces are eight billion ordinary men and women whose very lives depend upon the outcome of this deadly clash.

From The Author

One of the great sources of inspiration for this novel came to me from the Highlander TV series in the 1990s. Immortality has always been a fascinating subject for humans to think about since the beginning of time. Great thinkers and philosophers of the past examined the idea, and many came to the inescapable conclusion that there would be a price to pay for living forever.

In this novel I wanted to explore immortality from a different angle. Humans are free to make their own choices. In my novel, immortals face the same choices as humans, but in order to stay forever young, they must do things that contradict conventional human morality and values. And an old question comes to mind: who wants to live forever?
