Snippet from Book

"So you think this runs to what, the stratosphere?"

"You know these people better than I do, Jason."

Ender had seen their influence in operation. Control behind the wire ran to civilians, but Headquarters could look over an interrogator’s shoulder as he questioned a detainee and do everything but bring him down with a hard right. They usually did not intervene unless it was urgent and their input could make a difference, but they were there for that and other intervention, too.

Ender had slowly become aware of a third level—a parallel level—that should not have functioned at all. Though answering to the government, the Donner Party—and other civilian companies that supplied expertise—could paper any position while they worked the angles with soft words and handshakes. Usually benign, the process could turn rogue.

It had.

Map of Horn of Africa

This time Jason Ender is sent from DC to the Horn of Africa. Nearly below sea level and nearly at the equator, it's visited by the Kahmsin wind that makes sandpaper seem friendly. The camp is an old Foreign Legion base that has been expanded to deal with the mission of interdicting terrorists. This area is known as bin Laden's "Third Front."

About This Great Book

Have you ever wondered about what happens at the secret sites where terrorists are held outside the legal forty-eight?

Echo Five shows what goes on behind the wire. It's more and less than you can imagine, and more than Jason Ender imagines: suicide that may be murder, paydays that may be payoffs, and terrorism that may be the heart of terror.

This is the third Jason Ender novel that began with Less Than a Shadow and continued with The Peacock Angel.

Don't miss this newest one. No one but Jason Ender, the American agent, can play the espionage game as cool as he does. No one.

High wire now has a new meaning.

From A Review

ECHO FIVE is the kind of masterpiece you have come to expect from David Chacko. It is a candid "what if" about the things that go on when the press and the public cannot watch and when those who could speak out choose to close ranks. A breathtaking read, one cannot help but wonder whether Mr. Chacko is prophet, insider, or perhaps a little of both.

From The Author

I live in the Middle East most of the year and like to think I know what goes on with my neighbors. It's certainly more than we think and less than they would like us to think. What they would like most of all is not to be included in our empire.

When I'm in the U.S., I'm always surprised at the lack of urgency I find. What happens out in the provinces doesn't seem to be an issue at home. We leave these things to our politicians to sort out. If they can't tell us where Osama bin Laden is, even though he's the tallest man in Pakistan, well that's just the way it is. And that's just how empires are lost.
