The passage ahead looked foreboding. After walking for what seemed like an eternity, she stopped cold in her tracks. Was that a chirping sound she just heard? She strained to listen, but the only thing she could hear was her uneven breath. She thought about going back, but curiosity propelled her forward. With her adrenaline pumping, she quickened her pace, counting steps as she went. After she had walked ninety feet, Alexis came to another circular seam. It was no surprise that the second platform took her deeper into the structure.

The platform deposited her in another corridor. This one was longer and wider than the previous one she had entered. It seemed like it had taken her forever, but she finally came to what she thought was a dead end, but as she stepped closer, a pocket door slid open. With her heart thumping, she crossed the threshold. Cold air blasted from the chamber. It was like stepping into a meat locker. She shivered. The air was still. There was no draft.

She probed the darkness with her light, then stopped dead in her tracks What she saw made her gasp. She had never seen anything like it!

About this Book

Alexis Brooke, an expert at identifying Mesoamerican structures, is called upon to head up an expedition to the Yucatan Peninsula to investigate a half-buried Mayan ruin and a metallic anomaly that purportedly lies beneath it.

With the help of three other scientists, she soon discovers that not only is the ruin hollow, but that it also emits strange sounds, sounds that can only be heard at night. When a member of her team discovers a way to open it, she lowers herself into the ancient structure.

But it's not the ruin that puzzles her—it's what lies directly beneath it. Her archeological training doesn't begin to prepare her and her team for what they will find. . . .

In Michael Cole's thirteenth novel, Not of This Earth, Alexis Brooke, an archeologist, soon discovers that what she had been asked to identify below a Mesoamerican ruin in a remote portion of the Yucatan Peninsula defies explanation. When a member of her team finds a way to gain access to the ruin, she enters the mysterious metallic structure. In one of its chambers, she comes across a peculiar-looking translucent container. Her first mistake is to pick it up. Her second mistake is to drop it. Little does she know that her action will set off a chain of events that will require the help of an astrobiologist, the governor of Jalisco, a three-star general, and a contingent of highly trained battle-hardened federal troops to extricate her and her team from certain death.

The question on everyone's mind is where did the predator that's hell-bent on killing everyone come from? Did the creature come from the metallic structure beneath the ruin as the workers believe? Or did it come from the jungle? Alexis is convinced that the workers she hired to excavate the ruin are mistaken. They claim that something ominous crawled out of the ruin. Knowing that the laborers she hired for the dig are prone to exaggeration, she believes that a rogue cat is causing the problem. One thing becomes abundantly clear. As a dire situation becomes worse there's a good chance that she and her team will perish!

In Not of This Earth, Cole attempts to answer questions that archeologists have posed about the mysteries of ancient Mayan culture. A fascinating read!
